Verdict

Why should you buy the Apple Watch Series 7?

You might be fooled into thinking this isn’t a big upgrade – Series 6-like performance, no new health sensors, comparable design. But then there is the magnificent screen which, at least at first, surprises you every time it is turned on, it is much bigger than before. And brighter, with that cool refractive edge. Not to mention a user interface optimized for the new screen. One of our editorial staff wrote all these updates on the Advantages and disadvantages of Apple Watch Series 7.

Increased durability is also an important part of the equation, adding peace of mind for those who are hasty or clumsy. The new colors are cool and inviting, and the faster charging is a real bonus.

If you don’t need the health features, you can save money by choosing the also excellent Apple Watch SE, which has comparable performance but a slightly smaller screen.

Overall, this is a subtle but effective update over the Series 6 and a huge step up compared to any other Apple Watch. The Apple Watch has always been the leading smartwatch from any manufacturer, and the Series 7 keeps Apple at the forefront.

We have seen it with smartphones. The bezels were cut down and the screens grew until we were done with the giant phones and phablets that we have now. With its larger screen, I can’t help but believe that the Apple Watch is destined to take a similar path to independence. The smartwatch is already an extension of your iPhone on your wrist, but it is clear that it is capable of becoming more than an accessory.

Description

Design

The Apple Watch 7 features the first real product redesign since the Apple Watch 4. This is not a major change – the iconic curved circle remains – but it is clear that Apple wanted a softer overall aesthetic for its smartwatch.

Apple Watch Series 7 connectivity

You can best distinguish the Series 7 and Series 6 by the colors of the Apple Watch 7, which are all new: Green, Midnight (dark with a subtle hint of blue), Starlight (a mixture of silver and gold). Although Apple offered blue and red last year, they are slightly brighter now. If you want a more neutral metal, you will have to buy the stainless steel or titanium versions.

The Apple Watch 7 has the same swimming resistance rating (up to 50 meters) as previous models, but for the first time, it has also achieved IP6X certification for dust resistance. The modified geometry should make the latest Apple Watch more resistant to cracks, making it safer to wear while playing sports.

Apple Watch Series 7

Screen

Depending on the Apple Watch you’ve used before, the jump in screen size may be less obvious. It’s up more than 50% from Series 3 and 20% from Series 6. In any case, the more spacious user interface is useful. The buttons for entering the passcode stretch along the edges, and I didn’t have to point as carefully to hit the correct keys.

It’s also easier to hit the correct settings in the control center, and I can see more messages from my friends at once. My heart rate and elapsed time during workouts are also more readable. Visually impaired people will also appreciate that there are new, larger font size settings available.

The extra space also means that Apple has been able to insert a full QWERTY keyboard to respond to messages by typing or swiping across the screen. Compared to handwriting, dictation, or emojis, a keyboard offers a bit more flexibility, especially when the system correctly picks up your swipes.

But being so narrow, the accuracy rate is 60%, and I still prefer dictation. Also, the new screen may be big, but it’s definitely not big enough to make typing possible. Still, it is a good option.

In addition to expanding most of the UI elements, Apple has also added new faces that can display more information at once, such as the Modular Duo. There is also an Outline style that brings the clock digits to the edge, where they warp and “blend” over the sides.

The remaining two are a Portrait face that we already saw in the watchOS 8 betas, and World Time, which is useful for interacting with people from other countries. The one I have used the most is the Modular Duo, although it is not very attractive, and when you want something more personalized, you can use one with your face as the wallpaper.

The new Modular Duo screen is the most useful. It allows you to place two extended complications one on top of the other, while still showing the time and a small additional complication at the top. You can choose to show the world clock with a timer or the performance of your favorite actions with Apple Music, for example.

I opted for a Spotify controller and the weather forecast. Although the latter worked fine, showing me the hourly temperature and sunlight data on the screen, the Spotify complication was, in a word, rubbish. It only shows the words “Tap to play music”, and it took a tap and a second to get the playback controls out.

One second doesn’t sound like much, but when I go out for a run or juggle shopping, I don’t want to waste that time raising my arm and staring at the screen for more than a fraction of a second. I’m not going to dwell on this because it’s more of a Spotify problem than the Apple Watch, but considering the number of people who use the music app, both companies could use this complication to work better. I would also like to see more useful complications from other apps.

One last note about the Series 7 display: Although its actual maximum brightness has not changed, Apple has adjusted the system so that the Always-On display is up to 70% brighter when you’re indoors. This way, it’s easier to read if your hand is hidden under a table while you’re in a meeting.

Characteristics

New watch faces

Watch faces are an important part of the Apple Watch experience, as it is the screen you watch the most. With this in mind, it’s no wonder Apple added new watch faces designed specifically for the Series 7’s larger screen. There’s the Modular Duo dial, which is the first to have two large-format complications for displaying information, and Contour, a dial with numbers that fade over the curved edges of the Series 7.

Personally, I prefer the Modular Duo dial, as getting as much information as possible at a glance is more important to me than aesthetics. With the Modular Duo dial, I can see the time, a breakdown of my activity progress throughout the day, the temperature, and hourly weather forecasts just by looking at my wrist. In comparison, the regular Modular Dial, available on Series 6 and earlier, only allows you to add one large complication and several small ones.

I wish there were more dials to choose from specially designed for the Series 7, especially since the larger screen is its most significant improvement. Hopefully, we’ll see more new watch faces arriving in future software updates.

Apple Watch Series 7 keyboard

QWERTY keyboard

However, the new QWERTY keyboard is the real reason why you will benefit from the larger screen of the Series 7. In applications such as Messages or Mail, you only have to touch the message field when creating new text or email so that the keyboard appears. If you don’t see the keyboard right away, you can use the arrow at the bottom of the screen to switch between the keyboard option or Scribble, which allows you to trace individual letters with your finger.

The keyboard’s autocorrect function works surprisingly well, which is important on such a small keyboard where it is difficult to be precise. I was impressed with how he often completed my words correctly before I had finished writing, even when he was writing something very specific like a friend’s name.

Most of the time I have used the QuickPath feature, which allows you to type by sliding your finger between letters, as it is much easier to slide your finger across the Series 7 keyboard than it is to peck at individual keys.

Of course, you can also use the watch’s dictation function to send messages without having to pick up the phone. But not everyone is comfortable talking to their watch in public and there may be times when a message is simply too private to dictate out loud.

It’s great to finally have a native text input method on Apple Watch that is workable for typing entire words and phrases, unlike the Scribble feature. That said, if you want to write more than a short phrase like “See you downstairs” or “Don’t forget the milk,” you’d better use your phone.

Other functions

The Apple Watch has long put health and fitness features to the fore, and while there are no new health sensors, the cutting-edge elements are still there. Thus, you can measure your blood oxygen levels, take an ECG, and measure your heart rate. It also tracks your heart rate in the background, so it can notify you if your heart rate is unexpectedly high or low.

There’s also fall detection, which has been enhanced with the latest watchOS 8 software. If you fall hard and don’t move for 60 seconds, the watch sets off an alarm to alert anyone nearby, and it will call your chosen contacts. and to emergency services.

Now, it also works if you have fallen off a bike. As you understand, I have not tested this by pulling myself off the bike, but I have tested the original fall detector and it works fine. By default, it is disabled unless you are over 60 years old.

Of course, there are a ton of apps for the Watch (20,000 in total), so you can, for example, get directions on your wrist, which means you don’t need your iPhone in hand to find your way around an incomplete part. of the city at night. You keep track of your calories burned and have dozens of workouts, some of which, like a walk or jog outside, kick in automatically.

And then there’s Apple Fitness +, a well-recorded set of video workouts that you can watch on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV. Use Apple Watch to measure your heart rate and integrate it with on-screen video in real-time. Fitness + costs 10 USD per month, although the first three months are free when you buy a watch.

Hardware

WatchOS 8 and the redesigned chipset

WatchOS 8 is Apple’s new software for 2021, but like the design of the new watch, it doesn’t add much to the Apple Watch experience. The model has a “new” chipset inside, which is the S7 chip, but it is not more powerful than the S6 found in the Watch 6, it has just been redesigned to fit the new chassis (and probably to follow the rhythm of the “7” in the Watch name).

That said, we have found that the Watch 7 responds very well to everything we ask of it. Switching from one application to another is a breeze, it glides on with ease with the swipe of your finger or swivels nicely when using the digital crown to navigate menus and more.

WatchOS has gone through a few iterations over the years, and Apple seems to have come up with something useful: The large button on the side lets you jump between apps, while the Digital Crown makes interacting with lists or resizing a breeze. simple task.

The other great feature we used was the Focus mode – well, it was more forced by iOS 15, where it’s a great first.

The synergy between the Apple Watch and the iPhone has always been good -reflecting the flight mode, or passing calls or audio between the two, for example- and in this case, if you have notifications automatically silenced on your phone when you are in a certain place, or you have set a time to start disconnecting before sleeping, the Watch 7 will automatically enter that mode.

Apple Watch Series 7 sleep monitor

We advise you to spend some time with the new focus modes if you have not tried them yet: they can be a real help, but you have to make sure that the people you want to contact you can do so, and that the applications you use they can usually continue to “breakthrough” at key moments.

Audio monitor on the wrist

In this era of pandemics, being “forced” to wash your hands for 20 seconds and being reminded when you walk in the door is a great feature and for which we would buy the watch.

Another new feature that has really impressed us is the Assistive Touch: you can control your Watch by pinching and squeezing your fist, allowing you to navigate the phone without touching it.

It’s really cool and works great: it highlights interface elements in blue, letting you know what you’re tapping and pressing. You can even reconfigure this to open certain apps with a dedicated gesture – it will be interesting to see if Apple extends this feature to work outside of the accessibility menu in future updates.

Performance

Aside from these changes, Series 7 has a lot in common with Series 6. The Series 7 is powered by a new S7 system-on-chip but offers the same performance as the Series 6.

Apple Watch Series 7 blood o2

Both watches support blood oxygen saturation measurements, the ability to take an ECG from the wrist, heart rate measurements with high and low heart rate notifications, a compass for more accurate location tracking, an Always-on altimeter for elevation measurement, fall detection, Apple’s U1 chip that helps the watch work as a digital car key, emergency SOS, and international emergency calls. That is in addition to features that have been on the Apple Watch for years, like Apple Pay.

In fact, you don’t even need the latest Apple Watch to get a lot of the latest device features. Apple’s WatchOS 8 software, which was released on September 20, brings a ton of new capabilities to watches as old as the Series 3.

Among them, a more advanced fall detection that allows knowing if you have fallen in a specific type of exercise, such as cycling, the possibility of storing digital versions of your ID and the house key on the clock, the possibility of using Photos in Portrait mode as a watch face and a new Mindfulness app that replaces the Breath app. The same selection of training modes and Apple Fitness Plus compatibility are available on all Apple Watch models.

Running with the Watch Series 7

Thanks to a larger screen (the largest yet) and thinner edges (only 1.7 mm), it is easier to see your statistics on the screen and read text messages in the middle of the race, especially if you increase the size of the text in the settings.

Apple Watch Series 7

This increased screen size is also useful for the main function of the watch. With faces like Modular Duo, you can see two of your favorite stats, like activity or heart rate, on a bigger screen. Other faces also allow you to add applications such as training, music or weather to the screen so that you can access those functions with the touch of an icon.

It also announces when you close the rings or if you are ahead or behind the pace (as long as you set the pace alerts) and where you are on your goal (if you set one of distance, calories or time).

I love this feature, especially when doing kilometer reps or wanting to relax on a longer run, but stick with a specific pace – it saves me from having to constantly check my wrist, knowing that I’ll automatically hear an update.

With the watchOS 8 updates, Apple’s fall detection also applies to all workouts, including running. The algorithm has been updated to detect when you fall hard, specifically during an exercise session. When it detects the fall, it will initiate an alert, which you can either dismiss or use to trigger a call to emergency services.

Apple Watch Series 7 Workout

In the gym

Or rather, in your living room or anywhere you want to take Apple Fitness + (for a fee). The best thing about Apple products is, of course, the perfect connectivity with other devices of the brand. So while you exercise with Fitness +, you see your progress towards closing your Activity rings directly on the screen. And now you have even more options for closing those rings, including a new addition to the training line: Pilates.

Pilates is a perfect cross-training activity for runners as it focuses on the breath and core, which runners need for strong posture and solid form on the road.

The brand has also added Guided Meditations, a great way to get the right mental space for a workout or just to de-stress from the day and be ready to strike.

Apple Watch Series 7 Features

Battery

Apple continues to aim for 18 hours of battery life on the Apple Watch Series 7. That’s enough to get you through a day, maybe two if you turn off the always-on display and don’t exercise. In my tests, those figures are confirmed. I need to charge the Series 7 just a little less than I need to charge an old Series 5.

Instead, we have a faster charge thanks to a redesigned charging disk that also uses USB-C. A lot of people have those wall adapters, but you may have to buy another one (or a multi-charger) as it’s not included in the box. (As a point, the actual plug portion of the Apple Watch charger is longer now, which Apple says is for heat management.)

Charging is faster. Apple claims that it is 33% faster than the old cable and that seems correct to me. I’ve been able to charge 20% in just ten minutes multiple times and it has been easier to complete the charge in the morning while I entertain myself with coffee and breakfast. This makes it a bit more convenient to use the watch for sleep tracking.

Still, I would have preferred standard Qi charging over fast charging (if I had to choose). Qi charging mats are cheap and plentiful now, but integrating an Apple Watch charger adds cost and complexity. Older Apple Watch chargers will work well with the Series 7 but at a slightly slower charge speed.
