Should you buy the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 6?
As a multi-functional Bluetooth speaker, the design of the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 6 remains one of its highlights, and it’s both elegant and straightforward. Especially the design of the “handle” is perfectly integrated into the device itself, which not only makes the speaker itself more artistic.
The Onyx Studio 6 can also be better integrated into the modern home scene, allowing users to move the speaker more efficiently, with more substantial practical attributes. Of course, the sound quality of the Harman Kardon music player is also extraordinary, even in a confined space.

In our opinion: For its price, many would consider the Onyx Studio 6 lacking in features, and to some extent, we agree somewhat. But for those who prioritize sound over everything else, and want a speaker that sounds great, is portable, offers good battery life, and can play a role as a decorative piece of art, that’s where it deserves to be. worth the price.

The Onyx Studio 6 uses high-end fabrics and matte aluminum handles. The general shape is round and with the appearance of a seashell. Textured fabric and futuristic metallic materials create a stylish look.
Also, there are three colors to choose from: white, black, and blue. The elegant design shows extraordinary taste. Whether worn at home or on the road, the Onyx Studio 6 adds aesthetic color to life like a work of art.
The base is made of rubber material, which adds a lot of grips. The Onyx Studio 6 is 284 x 291 x 128mm in size and weighs 2.94kg. It is easy to hold and move. It can be placed as a piece of ornament in a living room, on your computer desk or anywhere else you like.
The speaker has an IPX7 waterproof characteristic. So even if it is immersed in 1-meter deep water for 30 minutes, there will be no problem. That also means you can safely take it to a pool party without worrying about it getting damaged from being soaked in liquid.
The Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 6 has the Harman Kardon branding across the front. There are five physical buttons near the handle, which can control playback, adjust volume, power switch, and device pairing. Below the power button, there is an LED indicator for pairing and charging.
On the back, there is a waterproof silicone protective cover. By removing the cover, you can see a service port, a charging port, and a 3.5mm inlet port. In addition, the Onyx Studio 6 is equipped with a Bluetooth 4.2 connection, which allows two smart devices to be connected at the same time without having to pair them again to change signal sources.
Dual-channel wireless technology supports serial wireless connection of two speakers with the same connection function to deliver stereo surround sound that doubles the sound volume and enhances the listening experience.
The Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 6 has a built-in 3283mAh lithium-ion polymer battery. For testing, the volume is around 40% to 60%, and two smart devices are connected simultaneously, which can continuously play music for almost 18 hours.
That also beats the official waiver on 8-hour cruise time. And we can also use the 3.5mm audio input interface to play audio through a wired connection, which can save power consumption to a certain extent.
Although the Onyx Studio 6 does not support Wi-Fi or mobile voice assistants, it has excellent music quality, is easy to transport, and has excellent battery life. It can also be used as decorative artwork. I think it’s worth the money for audiophiles who like it.back to menu ↑
We are all well aware of the quality one can expect when a product is designed and manufactured by Harman Kardon. Their products often top the charts when it comes to offering the best audio devices.
One of the great characteristics of its products is its quality of construction and its attractive design. However, the Onyx Studio 6 has raised the bar for the Harman brand by introducing the waterproof feature that we rarely see them do.
All thanks to the new material of the fabric that they have used to make an IPX7 certified product that you can wear any clothing without fear of damage. Looks strong with increased durability.
The Onyx Studio 6 comes with simple control buttons that you can use to control volume, play, or stop tracks. These control systems are very sensitive. It will respond quickly as soon as you press them.
There is a small LED light located below this control that flashes through the grille and a strong lead set that includes a single woofer and a single tweeter. Both mixes offer a power handling of 50 watts and a frequency that ranges from 50 Hz to 20 kHz.
The speaker also comes with a passive bass radiator. All of these speakers and woofers are placed on the front panel of the speaker.
The Studio 6 comes with Bluetooth version 4.2. It only supports the SBC and AAC CODEC. Pairing is relatively easy and takes a few seconds to connect. You have to activate the Bluetooth option on your phone and the speaker to connect it.
The connection range can vary from 10-15 meters when you are outdoors and indoors. It can reach 7-10 meters depending on the furniture you have at home, the room, the wall, and other arrangements of things.
Many people reasonably expect NFC pairing in this kind of product price range. Well, that is not the case here. This device does not have an NFC pairing function. If you are looking for a device that has this function, this is not the one.
The speaker will recognize your device once it has been successfully paired, which means it will save you the trouble of connecting over and over again. This device comes with multi-host pairing, which means that two or more people can connect to this device simultaneously and play their chosen music one at a time.
You can wirelessly connect two Onyx Studio 6 Bluetooth speakers to form a stereo duo for a more compelling music experience. This device also gives the option to connect with the older version of the Onyx series, such as the Onyx Studio 5.
You can easily connect these two devices by simply holding down the Bluetooth button for about 5 seconds on both speakers to get them working. This feature is only supported by the Studio Onyx 5. Earlier versions do not support this feature.
This feature is called Harman Kardon Wireless Dual Sound.
Suppose you want to connect a device that does not have a Bluetooth option, for example, an mp3 player. For these devices, an auxiliary port has been inserted into the apparatus. All you need is a 3.5mm auxiliary cable that connects to the speaker and source device, and you’re done.
Remember that the Bluetooth function will always be the top priority of this product. That means that both the auxiliary port and the Bluetooth will not work simultaneously. For the auxiliary port to work, you would have to disable the Bluetooth option and disconnect the device connected through that function.
The speaker does not come with a built-in microphone. If you like to use the hands-free function, this is not the product you should buy. Also, there is no app related to this product to help you fiddle with the equalizer settings.back to menu ↑
Frequency response accuracy
The Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 6 has decent frequency response accuracy. It has a balanced and neutral sound profile, suitable for listening to much different audio content, and there is a little extra warmth in the highs that can please music fans with a lot of basses. However, like most speakers, it struggles to reproduce punchy, punchy bass. There are also no sound customization features, such as an equalizer.
This speaker has a lower soundstage performance. You have to reduce the stereo content to mono to play it back, which doesn’t sound as immersive. Furthermore, its directivity is only good, resulting in a soundstage that is perceived as narrow, and also a bit uneven due to the overemphasis on the treble range.
This speaker has a fair dynamic performance. It doesn’t get very loud, and other speakers like the JBL PartyBox 300 can get louder. Also, there is some compression when you play it at maximum volume, which can be disappointing if you want to use it at parties or in large rooms.
The Onyx Studio 6 has a very balanced and neutral sound profile that makes it suitable for listening to many different musical genres. However, like many small speakers, it has a hard time reproducing punchy bass, which can be disappointing if you like bass-heavy genres like hip-hop. You also have to convert stereo content to mono, which doesn’t sound as immersive, and it lacks sound customization features.
The Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 6 is satisfying for podcasts. Its balanced mid and high ranges reproduce clear, precise, and detailed dialogue. Plus, it can be paired with up to two devices at the same time, making it easy to switch between listening to a podcast on your laptop and listening to an audiobook on your phone. However, it doesn’t get very loud, and there is some compression present when you play it at maximum volume.
Studio 6 is suitable for outdoor use. This well-built loudspeaker has an IPX7 rating for water resistance, although we do not currently conduct tests on this. Its integrated handle makes it very easy to carry. However, its 4.7-hour battery life is not ideal for long days outdoors, and it does not have much volume.
Videos / Movies
This speaker’s balanced, neutral sound profile can reproduce dialogue clearly, but lacks bass, so deep pounding and rumble are not felt in action-packed scenes. You have to convert the stereo content to mono, which doesn’t sound as enveloping. Also, its latency with Android and iOS devices over Bluetooth is probably too high to be adequate for watching videos, although some apps compensate for latency differently.back to menu ↑
The Studio 6 comes with a rechargeable battery. However, many people expected Harman Kardon to upgrade the battery, which certainly did not happen, which disappointed many customers.
You can expect about 8 hours of musical experience when you use it at a moderate volume. And if you like listening to loud music, the battery can drain in about 3 hours.
It may take an additional 5 hours for the speaker to fully charge. 8 hours of battery life is no less, but you can certainly expect more from this type of price range.
Harman Kardon should consider battery installation that has a great backup in the next onyx installation. It is a characteristic that many individuals expect from each brand.back to menu ↑
From a purely sonic standpoint, the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 6 delivers the kind of punchy bass that lovers seek. But in the category of portable and suitable for outdoor equipment, it has some worthy competition.

Differences between the Onyx Studio 6 and Studio 7
Harman has updated the Onyx Studio speaker system, the previous version of which was released last February. According to the developers, the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 7 combines high-quality stereo sound with an avant-garde design.
If the Onyx Studio 6 looks like a designer bag, the Onyx Studio 7 takes a completely different approach. The fabric and metallic materials are preserved, but this speaker looks more like a tribute to the planet Saturn. However, this new version does not have protection against elements, only Studio 6 offers this benefit.
The heart of the Onyx Studio 7 is comprised of two 25mm tweeters, complemented by a “powerful bass module”. The column received a built-in rechargeable battery that should last for 8 hours of music playback. The device can be used as a standalone Bluetooth speaker or as part of a two-speaker system (via the wireless dual sound feature). There are no posts for this criterion.
The JBL Boombox 2 is powerful and has stereo drivers. Instead, the Sony SRS-XB43 and SRS-XB33 withstand exposure to water, with some of them even offering LED light shows.
But it’s hard to match the Onyx Studio 6’s main selling point: the gonzo bass response. If that is what you are looking for, you are sure to be happy with the investment.
