JBL is a recognized brand in the audio industry for the quality of its products. In recent years they have focused their efforts on producing quality wireless speakers and the Xtreme 2 is one of their best products. This device does its name justice: it produces great power, with very strong bass. It is one of the best bass lover speakers to use outdoors. The JBL Xtreme 2 offers a richer sound than the previous model and integrates improved drivers. Here I tell you everything you need to know about this great model.
JBL Xtreme 2 Design
The JBL Xtreme 2 speaker is available in black, blue, and green. It has the same cylindrical shape as the previous model and very solid build quality. It integrates a rubber base at the bottom so that the speaker does not roll and is covered by rubber and a grill that is IPX7 certified against water and dust, which means that it can be submerged up to a meter deep for approximately 30 minutes.
The JBL Xtreme 2 has dimensions of 13.6 x 28.8 x 13.2 cm. It is a bit larger than the original model and it is also somewhat heavy (2.39 kg). However, it integrates a neck strap that is attached to two metal rings for easy transport. It is not as portable as other models, but its construction and sound make it an ideal option to take to the beach or the pool.
At the top of the JBL loudspeaker is a control panel that integrates a central button for power and another for using JBL Connect + technology. This allows you to connect the JBL Xtreme 2 with up to one hundred JBL speakers in party mode, or two speakers to listen to music in stereo. On the left, it presents a button for Bluetooth connectivity and another to lower the volume. On the right I find buttons to increase the volume, play/pause. The latter also works to make calls and control a personal assistant like Siri or Google assistant. In the lower part of the front panel, also integrates an LED indicator of the battery status.
The connectors are located at the bottom of this portable speaker, under a protective zipper. It integrates a micro-USB input for charging, two USB ports that allow you to connect and charge mobile devices, and a 3.5mm auxiliary audio input (The audio cable is not included).
JBL Xtreme 2 Sound
One of the most important improvements to the JBL Xtreme Bluetooth speaker over the original Xtreme is that it integrates new drivers that produce higher quality sound. This speaker features two 70mm woofers, two 20mm tweeters, and dual passive radiators at the ends. The four active drivers are powered by an amplifier that supplies 10 watts to each driver (40W total) when the JBL loudspeaker is connected to a power source. The amplification is reduced a bit when using the drums but still produces a very powerful sound. It also works with a wider frequency response of 55Hz-20kHz and has a signal-to-noise ratio of more than 80dB.
The JBL Xtreme 2 produces very powerful bass that does not distort, even when using the maximum volume level. It also has a type of digital processing (DSP) that reduces the force of the bass at high volumes, but not so much that it loses its noticeable presence. At moderate volumes, the bass sounds richer. It has surprising power and an ideal sound profile for lovers of bass. Audiophiles looking for sound fidelity may be somewhat disappointed with the strong bass presence, but the mix is ideal for indoors or outdoors. Beyond this, the medium and high tones present good details. The vowels are perceived as clear and clean, although the low ones come to overshadow the mid-tones. In general, the speaker produces a powerful sound with a very strong bass presence, too much for our liking.
JBL Xtreme 2 Connectivity
- The speaker works with Bluetooth 4.2 technology. It has a good connection range, although I should avoid as much as possible having a wall in between, between the device and the source, to maintain optimal operation.
- Through the JBL Connect Plus function I can synchronize up to 100 speakers of this brand in party mode and I can also connect two speakers in stereo mode to create a more dynamic sound environment.
- It has the ability to connect with two devices simultaneously, a possibility that could be very welcome at times. In meetings, for example, multiple people might pick their favorite topics for playback.
- It has a 3.5mm auxiliary port. It is very useful for connecting wired devices and also reduces battery consumption.
- The microphone is also one of its strengths. I can use it as a conference speaker, to make calls using the “hands-free” or to manage your favorite personal assistants, such as Siri or Google Assistant. The clarity of the voices is great and there are no noticeable distortions.
- Through the application, you can download the necessary software for updates and it also allows you to assign different functions to the different buttons.
I can say that the JBL Xtreme 2 comes with one of the best batteries available among the Bluetooth speakers on the market. It has a capacity of 10000mAH that allows it to provide an average of 15 hours of continuous operation, although this capacity varies according to the volume. It also works as a charger for our mobile devices through USB ports. Additionally, they have the ability to charge quickly, the full charge is approximately 3.5 hours.
With an audio quality present, a correct autonomy, very great ease of use, and a robustness foolproof, our opinion on the JBL Xtreme 2 is more than positive. For evenings with friends with finally a powerful sound, I can only recommend it!
I can say that this wireless speaker shows the best that the brand can offer. It’s visually appealing, has a very solid build quality, and is water and dust resistant. Its bass can be excessive indoors, although it works very well outdoors. If you are looking for good wireless speakers that you can take to pools or the beach, and that also provide you with bass power, as well as volume, this speaker is the one.
It is not a cheap speaker, but the price is justified as it is one of the most powerful portable wireless speakers that I have tested of its size in Cultura Sonora.
Other models that I recommend you review are the JBL Charge 4 and Marshall Kilburn 2 Bluetooth Speaker.
