The Sony WH-1000XM2 headphones is the update to the excellent MDR-1000X and has left us wanting more. Read our Sony MDR 1000X Review. It has a solid design, is comfortable, wireless and comes with unique technologies that allow you to optimize the sound depending on where you are. It is the best noise-canceling headphones we’ve tested for sound quality. Here’s what you need to know about Sony’s latest gem. By the way, the third and fourth versions of these headphones have come out, check out Sony WH-1000XM3 review and Sony WH-1000XM4 review.
Sony WH-1000XM2 Headsets Design
The Sony WH-1000XM2 is a closed-type, circumaural headphone, very comfortable and ideal to take anywhere. It is foldable, the cups can be turned in various directions, and the headband easily adjusts to ten different positions. The body is made of strong plastic and reinforced with polished metal on the bands. Like the previous model, the Sony WH-1000XM2 headphones is padded both on the inside of the band and in the cups, with a memory foam padding that makes them very comfortable.
The cups are padded with a good quality synthetic fabric on the outside that makes them less soft than the previous model, but more resistant. This is a positive point to note, as many users of the MDR-1000X primitives complained about the brittleness of the fabric.
On the outside of the left glass, there are only two physical buttons: one for power and Bluetooth connectivity and the other allows us to turn on, turn off and select the noise cancellation ambient mode. In the right cup, we find a micro / USB charging port. They also feature an NFC (Near-field communication) chip for fast syncing.
The purchase package includes a removable (3.5 mm) 1.4-meter audio cable, a sturdy carrying case, a micro / USB cable, an adapter for use in airplanes, instructions for use, and a QR code. This code is used for the Sony app that we will talk about later. Interested? Check the deal on Amazon.
One of the most innovative aspects of the Sony MDR1000 headphones was the touch controls, and the WH-1000XM2 has them too. They allow you to handle various aspects of playback by lightly tapping on the right helmet.
- To advance or rewind the playlist, slide your finger forward or backward
- To control the volume, we slide our fingers up or down.
- To pause or start playback, we double-tap the headset.
State-of-the-art noise cancellation
The noise cancellation of these Sony headphones is one of the best that we can find on the market, only comparable with the also excellent Bose QuietComfort 35 II. The WH-1000XM2 has external microphones that pick up ambient noise and produce signals to cancel it out. In addition, it has microphones inside the helmets. The internal microphones detect the sound coming out of the headphones to optimally customize noise cancellation. This Sony technology is known as the Sense Engine.
These Sony headphones integrate and enhance various features to optimize noise cancellation that made the MDR1000 famous. If we place our hand on the right helmet the volume will decrease and the noise cancellation will be turned off so that we can hear external sounds. On the contrary, if we move our hands away from the glass, the music will rise again and the noise cancellation will be activated again. This is a very useful feature when we want to listen to the outside sound at some specific moment or we want to have a momentary conversation.
They also have a function that allows ambient sound to mix with the music we listen to. This option can be useful when we are in an airport or a train station and we want to be aware of the arrival of our plane or train. Ambient sound control is smarter on Sony WH-1000XM2 helmets than on MDR1000. Now, the amount of noise cancellation varies automatically depending on what you’re doing: walking, sitting, on the subway.
Like the MDR1000s, the Sony WH-1000XM2 scans your surroundings with built-in microphones to measure and optimize noise cancellation. This allows you to optimize the sound according to certain variables, for example, if you are wearing glasses or have long hair, to offer the best possible quality.
A novelty of the Sony WH-1000XM2 headphones is that they integrate a new atmospheric pressure optimizer that measures the pressure of the space where you are. This feature also helps you get the best possible noise cancellation. This technology is exclusive to Sony helmets.

New features through the Headphones Connect App
The Sony WH-1000XM2 wireless headphones is truly a technological gem, but in order to take advantage of all its functions, we need to use the Headphones Connect application. It is not necessary to use the app in most cases, but it has several very useful tools. The three main functions are adaptive sound control, equalizer, and the sound quality mode.
- Adaptive sound control detects external noise and allows us to suppress it completely or, conversely, to suppress only what we do not want to hear. For example, we can choose if we want to eliminate only the noise of voices, traffic, etc.
- The five-band equalizer offers effective bass control as well as sound profiles suited to different venues. It also allows us to save new sound profiles with the modifications we make.
- In the sound quality mode of the app, we can prioritize between sound quality or a stable connection. If we choose the sound quality, we will reproduce audio files with high birthrates or information data, which provides a deeper sound. The stable connection option ensures smooth Bluetooth playback.
SONY WH-1000 XM2 sound quality
On the sound side, the Sony WH-1000XM2 headphones sound just as good as the MDR-1000X. The rhythmic precision is surprising and they feature a neutral and highly articulate sound profile. All shades are well defined. The bass feels deep and powerful, without overshadowing the other frequencies, while the mid and high tones feel direct and clear.
The equalization of these headphones is pleasant and ideal for listening to any musical genre for a long time since it does not cause any type of fatigue. When comparing both the WH-1000XM2 and the MDR-1000X, we think the new model sounds a bit clearer, especially in the mid-high frequencies.
The Sony WH-1000XM2 is compatible with Sony DSEE HX and S-Master HX technologies. DSEE HX enhances highly compressed audio files, such as MP3s, to a result that is somewhat closer to that of high-resolution files. DSEE HX technology was already in the previous model, but now we have the option to turn it off if we want. S-Master HX, also present in MDR1000 headphones, effectively reduces distortion in audio files. In short, these Sony wireless headphones not only put out great sound but also enhance the audio they work with.
The Sony WH-1000XM2 Bluetooth headphones emit a very good quality of sound connected by cable. However, as with the previous model, digital corrections and noise cancellation will not work without a battery.
Best possible wireless playback
The Bluetooth connectivity of the Sony WH-1000XM2 has improved compared to the previous model. They now support the aptX codec. This is a high-quality Bluetooth format that allows the playback of audio files with a bit depth of up to 24bit / 48kHz, with minimal signal lag.
In addition, they are compatible with LADC technology, which allows data transmission at 990Kbps, with files up to 24bit / 96kHz. This is a tremendous capacity, taking into account that Bluetooth headphones that do not have this technology reach an average transfer speed of 328Kbps, with a maximum sample rate and bit depth of 44.1KHz / 16bits.
These Sony wireless headphones sound a little better if we use them with a device that supports aptX or LDAC codecs (LDAC will become a standard on Android Oreo devices).
Sony WH-1000XM2 Battery Life
The Sony WH-1000XM2 helmets add additional functions over the previous model and also feature an improved battery. The MDR1000 supported 20 hours of continuous playback, while the WH-1000XM2 reached up to 30 hours in wireless mode and with noise cancellation activated. It can be used for 40 hours when using a wired and noise-canceling connection.
It also has fast charging technology that gives you up to 60 minutes with just ten minutes of charging. An hour and a half prepare them for 24 hours of playback, and a full charge takes less than four hours.
Conclusions about the SONY WH-1000 XM2
The Sony WH-1000XM2 integrates the latest technologies to offer the best sound, wired or wireless, among all the noise-canceling headphones on the market. It has useful touch controls and unique functions to optimize sound for any environment. In addition, it is comfortable, light, and has a folding structure: it is perfect to take them anywhere. We honestly did not find any relevant negative points in them. So if you’re looking for a comfortable, sublime-sounding, noise-canceling Bluetooth headset, there’s no better option.
